Good Win Keeps Stauntons’ Promotion Hopes Alive

The Barry Gambits have already packed their suitcases for the trip back down to division 4 of the East Glamorgan Chess League but it is still unclear which other two division 3 teams will join them on this unwelcome journey.

Pentyrch B who, like the Gambits, were promoted last season already have one foot on the demotion ‘bus and were desperately hoping not to worsen their plight when they played the Gambits last Monday evening at the Witchill Hotel. At the conclusion of the match the visitors led by 2½ :1½ from four completed boards but Barry are fairly confident of levelling the score with a further win from one remaining game which is being considered for adjudication to leave Pentyrch still biting their nails in the division 3 departure lounge.

The Penarth Piers’ situation in division 2 of the league is similar to that of the Gambits in division 3 and it was therefore essential for the Barry Stauntons’ promotion hopes that they took the lion’s share of points when their lowly placed rivals came to the Witchill on Wednesday evening. With a rejuvenated Craig Woolcock back in harness and leading the charge from board 1, a very welcome 4:1 victory was recorded ensuring that Barry’s third team remain live contenders for a place in next season’s premier division.
