With depleted credit card balances, only hard centres left in their chocolate selection boxes, family pets cowering at the mere mention of turkey and painfully embarrassing memories that an over indulgence of strong ale, vintage port or single malt whisky does not magically bring about the ability to imitate the vocal talents of Sinatra or Presley, members of Barry Chess Club creaked into action last Wednesday for the second half of the 2001/2002 East Glamorgan league season when the Barry Bosons entertained Pontypridd Un at the Witchill Hotel.
Motivation for players in Barrys first team will now prove difficult as with no realistic chance of retaining their East Glamorgan title and virtually no danger of being relegated a finishing position of 7th. in division 1 would, for all practical purposes, serve them equally as well as 2nd. place. The team nevertheless took the opportunity to flex its muscles against Ponty who are in dire straits at the bottom of the table and raced into a healthy 3:1 lead on the night of the match. One remaining adjourned game which should also go Barrys way will give the Bosons a comfortable victory of 4 points to 1.
Anyone wishing to play chess as a new pastime in 2002 will be welcomed at Barry Chess Club which meets every Wednesday evening at 7:45 pm. on the first floor of the Witchill Hotel, Barry Road.
